Manufacturers and business entities need to get BIS certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, it is required for foreign business to get BIS certification before continuing operations in India.

The Indian Government requires a majority of products to have a BIS certification to signify  a guarantee of quality, safety and reliability of products that will be sold and distributed in India.

Products that Require BIS Certificate

Here are some types of products that need BIS certificate before being exported to India:
  • Diesel engines

Types of Schemes for BIS Certification

Here are some common types of strategies through which BIS Certification is provided:

Normal Procedure for Domestic Manufacturer – The domestic manufacturer is required to fill out the BIS application form and submit it with relevant documents and fee. After this, evaluation of the product is carried out through testing in laboratories. Finally, if the sample is acceptable, the applicant gets certified within 4 months.

Tatkal Scheme – For manufacturers that require mandatory BIS certification, Tatkal scheme can be a good idea. Under this scheme, the application and evaluation process is sped up. The manufacturer or business entity can get certification within 30 days of documents’ submission.

ECO Mark Scheme – This is BIS Certification for eco-friendly products. There are certain guidelines that should be met for a product to be characterized as eco-friendly. The process of evaluation and approval is just like the domestic manufacturer scheme.

Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme – Foreign applicants can get BIS certification and ISI mark under the foreign manufacturers’ certification scheme. The time required for this is around 6 months.
